General Inspector

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a General Inspector to join our team. The position will support the Manager Development, Health & Compliance and is responsible to ensure reasonable, but adequate compliance by the public of the laws, by-laws and acts administered by Council.

The position is offered on a full-time permanent basis, classified at Level 4 (currently $74,199 to $79,103 plus 10% superannuation) based on qualification and experience, of the SA Municipal Officers Award and Wattle Range Council’s ASU Enterprise Bargaining Agreement. The position is also entitled to a rostered day off each month.

The successful applicant will be required to:

  • Ensure that responsible animal ownership is actively promoted throughout the Council area and up‐to‐date, accurate information and advice is available to Council, employees and the community on animal management.
  • Proactively control the keeping of animals within the Council area, including registrations, permits, infringements, investigations and destruction of dangerous animals.
  • Take a proactive approach to fire prevention as Council’s nominated Fire Prevention Officer and administer Council legislative requirements and achieve public compliance under the Fire and Emergency Services Act
  • Achieve public compliance with the Road Traffic Act, Local Government Act, Impounding Act, Expiation of Offences Act, Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act, Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act, Food Act & Public Health Act.
  • Provide a pro‐active and effective compliance service.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of legislation and best practice in relation to responsibilities, ensuring other employees and the community are kept informed of changes which may affect them.
  • Maintain records, registers and other administrative responsibilities in compliance with legislation and Council policies and procedures.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Current C class drivers’ licence
  • High level customer service skills, including the ability to deal with agitated and/or difficult customers
  • Confident with handling animals, in particular dogs
  • Proven skills to work effectively within a team environment and take the initiative to solve problems or to make improvements
  • Relevant experience in a similar role
  • Qualifications relevant to the following will be well regarded:
  • Certificate IV Regularity Services and/or Cert IV Building & Construction
  • Firearms Licence
  • Fire prevention officer accreditation
  • Authorised officer pursuant to Fire Emergency Services Act
  • Animal Management training
